Official Press Release

Are you a Mountain Biker? Would you like to be a Mountain Biker? Or do you just want to get the family out of the house for an hour or so once a week?   Then the Berkshire Cycling Association (BCA) has the event series for you – The FREE 2014 Berkshire Bike Race Series!  The goal of this event is to grow the sport of Mountain Biking in Berkshire County through fun family oriented events, and instill an athletic lifestyle and commitment to community involvement in today’s youth.

On June 3rd the BCA kicks off a FREE 13 race mountain bike series every Tuesday night until the season finale on August 26th at Springside Park in Pittsfield Massachusetts.  Go time is every Tuesday, Tuesday, TUESDAY at 6:30 PM for the main and special events. Kids’ race will start at 6:00 PM. Please be there earlier for registration.

Never been Mountain Bike racing?  Raced more than you breathe?  Well we have some new things for this FREE series:  11 of the 13 races will be a standard mass start with Novice, Intermediate, and Expert classes in both men’s and women’s groups.  On July 22nd we will have a special time trial (race against the clock) event and on August 19th the Mass Start race format will be a Criterium.

Points will be awarded to participants, top 10 finishers in each class, and special participation (Hawaiian shirt and vintage bike night).  Points will be totaled throughout the season for the end of season series Championship.  And just to make things even more fun, (if that’s possible), each night will feature a different Special event (wheelie contest, obstacle course, etc.) designed to help those aerobically challenged participants stay competitive for the series championship.

The FREE Berkshire Bike Race Series is intended as a fun training event for the whole family, located in a central Pittsfield city park with a Kids’ race, 12 and under, push, pull, or drag format, and the attendance of food vendors.  It will be an evening of outside fun for all.

This is a FREE series only through the dedicated efforts of a small group of volunteers concerned about the growth of outdoor sports in the youth of Berkshire County.  To keep this effort going we need not only generous sponsorship for race supplies (race numbers, course marking supplies, porta potties), but people willing to lend a hand.  If you would like to give a little back to the community, or someone you know is racing and you just want to be there to help, please go to our web site, www.berkshiremtb.com and let us know.

Hope to see everyone soon.

Erik Forestell (Events Coordinator, Berkshire Bike Race Series)
